PARENTS’ GUIDE

Welcome to LFS!

Dear parents,

we are delighted to welcome you to the Lycée Français de Séoul (LFS) community. Your child will join the 540 students from Petite Section (1st year of Kindergarten) to Terminale (grade 12) of more than 20 different nationalities. At LFS, we pride ourselves on the diversity of our students and teachers, and celebrate the cultures, languages and identities of our community.

The LFS is the only school in South Korea to have all levels approved by the French Ministry of National Education. Our establishment also benefits from an agreement with the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE), which coordinates a network of 540 French schools around the world.

By joining the LFS, your child now benefits from the opportunities offered by the AEFE: sports, scientific and cultural competitions, and exchanges between establishments in the Asia Pacific zone.

If you ever have to leave Seoul, your child will be able to continue their education in one of the schools in the network, without an entrance exam or language test, with the guarantee the continuity of curriculum and consistency in the lessons provided.

Finally, the LFS is an establishment co-managed by the AEFE, represented by the Headmaster, and by the Parent’s Association (APE); the role of parents is therefore essential, and allows you to get involved in the education and development of your child’s school.

In this Parents’ Guide, you will find useful information for your child’s schooling, and for preparing for his start of the academic year. If you join us in the middle of the school year, you will receive all the important information before the first day of class, to ensure successful integration and continuity of learning.

We wish you a good reading

Mr. Cédric TOIRON
Headmaster of the French School of Seoul
Mrs. Anne-Cécile BEZAULT
President of the LFS Parents’ Association

INFORMATION FOR THE KINDERGARTEN

Your child has class Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.. Students study the 5 learning areas of the program through group or individual workshops. Find more details on the Kindergarten page.

The youngest students (TPS, PS or sometimes MS) spend a nap time after lunch, while the older children (MS and GS) enjoy a quiet time after lunch. Napping children each have a small bed, and a duvet with built-in pillow given to the family on Fridays to be washed during the weekends.

What to put in the school bag

Each kindergarten student should have their own bag containing a complete change of clothes (pants / shorts, t-shirt, underwear), as well as a water bottle, K94 masks and a pack of tissues.

On designated days, the students have to wear LFS sports uniforms. Please ask the teacher directly for more information.

Your child is required to have a comfortable outfit allowing him/her to practice daily motor skills, and to dress and undress independently: we do not recommend outfits with laces, buttons on the pants, and  complicated to put on. Your child will of course be assisted if necessary, but we encourage autonomy from an early age. Lastly, we ask families to mark the clothes with the child’s name to avoid losses.

Note that it is forbidden to bring food, toys, jewelry or other accessories.

Student assessment

Kindergarten students are assessed by skills throughout the school year, and at the end of their 3-year cycle (PS, MS, GS). Parents receive a report card twice a year (January / February and June) via a digital application “Je Valide”, and a summary of the skills acquired at the end of GS.

The assessment is based on the principle of positive evaluation by showing over the year only the skills well mastered and acquired by the students. At the end of the cycle, the skills that still need training will be specified.

Individual meetings are organized between parents and teachers at the end of October and the end of April. You can also request a meeting with the teacher at any time of the school year to discuss your child.

Dropping off and picking up your child

Each morning, students must be accompanied to class between 8:20 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and picked up in front of the class between 3:05 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and between 11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Student assessment and exams

Students in Middle school are assessed on specific skills associated with different subjects; the degree of acquisition is specified in the report card.

In high school, teachers assign grades on a scale of 0 to 20, equivalent to the baccalaureate exams.

Parents receive a competency or grade report at the end of each trimester (December, March and June), after the class council meetings with all teachers, the Headmaster, the Dean of Students (CPE), the parents’ representatives, and the student delegates participating.

Collective meetings are organized between parents and teachers in mid-September to present the course of the year and the lessons. Individual parent-teacher meetings are organized in early December to discuss your child. You can also request a meeting with one of the teachers at any time of the school year.

At the end of 3ème (grade 9), the students take national exams, of which its results supplement the assessments of the skills acquired  for the 3-year cycle from 5ème (grade 7) to 3ème (grade 9). All together form the final grade to obtain the National Diploma Brevet Certification (DNB).

Throughout the two years of Première (grade 11) and Terminale (grade 12), students are evaluated in continuous assessment and take one-time exams during and at the end of the year. All grades make up the final grade for obtaining the Baccalaureate.

If your child is registered in SIA (American International Section), he will have to take specific tests for each of the exams.
