ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Elementary school begins in CP (grade 1) and ends in CM2 (grade 5).

It offers a framework for exploration and knowledge to be processed and structured, fosters a taste for learning and provides the solid basis our students need for their future. Fluency in written and spoken French, Mathematics, Modern Languages, History, Geography and Science, as well as Arts and Sports, serve as gateways to the world, and are central to our teaching and contribute to the education of tomorrow’s citizens.

LEARNING THE FUNDAMENTALS

Proficiency in both oral and written French is the main focus of elementary school. Our teachers guide students in learning how to build sentences, structure ideas, present oral work individually or in groups, and read and understand texts. Students explore the subtleties of the French language, develop their ability to express themselves and cultivate a critical approach  while growing in autonomy and independence throughout these years.

Students also learn mathematics, science and technology using problem solving, arithmetic and geometry. They develop strategies for studying and working, and actively participate in individual or team projects, competitions and games.

In addition, practicing sports and engaging in artistic activities on a weekly basis enable students to acquire a variety of skills and broaden their interests. Citizenship is also part of the curriculum taught over the course of these five years.

Starting in CE2 (grade 3), students are encouraged to participate in delegate elections. They  build their election campaign by delivering a speech in front of the class and creating a poster to be displayed in the school. Each class elects its delegate and substitute who will sit on the quarterly council of delegates to speak out for their peers, submit issues, find solutions, make suggestions and start projects.

English and Korean classes are compulsory throughout elementary school:

  • In CP / CE1 (grade 1 / 2) : 3 hours of English, including 1 hour of another subject taught in English (EMILE or “Teaching of subjects in foriegn language”), and 1 hour of Korean per week
  • In CE2 / CM1 / CM2 (grade 3 / 4 / 5) : 4 hours of English, including 2 hours of another subject taught in English (EMILE), and 2 hours of Korean per week. .

Students can attend the American International Section (SIA) from CP (grade 1) onwards. Find out more on our Language Learning.

A HIGHLY QUALIFIED EDUCATIONAL TEAM

Elementary classes are taught by a bilingual French and English-speaking teacher, along with an English teacher and a Korean teacher for foreign languages.

The 3 members of the teaching team closely monitor students’ progress, contribute to their quarterly assessment and organize projects throughout the year.

REGULAR ASSESSMENT

Each student’s skill development is continuously monitored and assessed during the learning cycles. A periodic report card (bulletin) is provided to parents at the end of each term.

THE PRIMARY SCHOOL LIBRARY AS A GATEWAY TO LITERATURE

Students visit the Primary School Library (BCD) every week to explore or study a new book. The librarian and the class teacher set up projects together such as theatrical performances, oral reading, story writing, analysis of a press article, assessment of the value of various information sources, editorial work for a school newspaper, etc.

Students learn how to find their way around the library, explore the different forms of writing (documentary, storytelling, theater, poetry, scrapbook, novel, etc) and make a choice among the hundreds of books available.

They may freely consult books on site and borrow some for home use.

FIRST SCHOOL TRIPS

Elementary school classes go on day or one-week trips to explore Korea at least once a year: seaside classes in Sokcho, trips to the Korean countryside, art and culture classes with an artist or visits to museums…

These outings provide an excellent opportunity for socialization and growth. Teachers prepare the students for several days or even months in advance to relate the trips to their learning experiences, and prepare the students to actively participate while on the trips.

TESTIMONIAL

We are very happy with the academic level at LFS, especially in English which is taught by native speakers. Since we came from France, we were concerned that our son Gaspard would be lagging behind but he quickly made great progress after a few weeks of adaptation. He is now able to communicate, make himself understood and study science in English. A real plus for his schooling and studies after the baccalaureat.
