DAILY PROGRESS IN FRENCH

1

ATTEND THE BRIDGE CLASS

All non-French speaking students aged 6 to 10 (international age – find the table of grade equivalencies) are eligible for the Bridge Class and follow the French elementary school program in their regular class at the same time.

Prior to admission, families meet with the LFS team and are introduced to the registration process, the schooling stages and learning steps.

The family’s educational project, the student’s academic record, his/her general and cross-curricular skills and his/her motivations are reviewed.

Admission to LFS – and to the Bridge Class – is open throughout the school year but preferably in September when the LFS school year starts.

For students in different grade levels:

  • Kindergarten students are directly enrolled in their regular class and learn French with their teacher and their Kindergarten assistant.
  • Students in secondary school must have a minimum level of B1 in French to be admitted to LFS. An interview will be conducted with students of a lower French level to review their educational project and identify external partners or resources for further language learning . A new interview is organized for 4 to 6 months later to assess the student’s proficiency in French and to confirm his or her enrollment.

2

ATTENDING BRIDGE CLASS

The student simultaneously attends the Bridge Class and his or her regular class on the first day of school.

Each day, the student will learn French for 3 hours with the small group of students in the Bridge Class and will also meet the students of his or her regular class to follow the grade level curriculum .

Bridge class lessons will first focus on the learning environment to facilitate the student’s successful adaptation to LFS before quickly moving to the instructions given in regular class to help the student follow their class on a daily basis.

3

BRIDGE CLASS IN PRACTICE

Bridge class takes place in a dedicated classroom equipped with tools, posters and books designed to help students learn French. The teacher is always present in this room and therefore available for students’ questions during recess.

Students learn primarily from games, songs, art, reading, theater and exposure to French culture. A large part of the sessions focus on understanding the instructions and exercises given in the regular class.

Each day, the student has to memorize about ten words, which are then verified by dictations in class. A follow-up sheet summarizing the week’s topics and target language, as well as the student’s progress, is sent to the parents every weekend.

The DELF’ Prim level test is used to assess individual progress at the beginning and end of each school period (September – October / November – December / January – February / March – April / May – June) and the results are communicated to the parents. When the student reaches level A2, he or she can attend his or her regular class full time.

Students in regular classes may also benefit from Complementary Pedagogical Assistance (APC) provided by French teachers allowing them to follow and learn at their own pace and according to their needs and skills.

BEYOND BRIDGE CLASS

LFS provides students with extracurricular services (SES) after school and during school vacations:

  • Supervised studies every day from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm for CP to CM2 (grade 1 to 5) students;
  • FLE classes (French as a Foreign Language) from 3:30 pm to 6 pm for CP to CM2 (grade 1 to 5) students;
  • Summer camps in July combining FLE classes in the morning with fun activities in the afternoon;
  • Dedicated revision weeks to brush up on French basics at the end of August

A COMMITTED EDUCATIONAL TEAM

Teachers of both the Bridge Class and the regular French class pay close attention to the student’s development and progress. The Director of Primary School and the Communication and Promotion manager also contribute to the supervision of the Bridge Class.

Parent-teacher meetings are organized throughout the year:

  • Beginning of September: information meetings with the Bridge Class and regular class teachers
  • End of October : individual appointment with the Bridge Class and regular class teachers
  • December : assessment meeting with the Bridge Class teacher
  • February  : individual appointment with the Bridge Class and regular class teachers
  • April/May : assessment meeting with the Bridge Class teacher

Furthermore, parents have the opportunity to request an appointment with their child’s teacher at any time during the year to discuss any issue related to his / her education and well-being. You can find contact information for teachers in Pronote.

Finally, parents are encouraged to express their opinions and communicate their views on the learning process of their child in regular surveys. We strive to ensure children learn and enjoy French in the best possible conditions. Our expertise and a close partnership between the school and the family are key factors of success.

ONGOING SUPPORT THROUGHOUT EDUCATION

Once the student has left the Bridge Class and joined his or her regular class full-time, he or she continues to benefit from French learning assistance through weekly French as School Language (FLSco) sessions.

The objective of this program is to facilitate students’ access to high school learning in French. The courses focus on the specific needs of the student while adapting to his or her profile. Misinterpretations and issues in the various subjects are addressed, and appropriate educational solutions are put in place for students to improve their oral and written skills, all in an environment where critical thinking is encouraged and curiosity for learning is nurtured.

These sessions evolve according to the student’s progress. There is no evaluation but there is regular homework.

CONTINUITY IN EDUCATION THROUGH THE AEFE NETWORK

Bridge Class exists in many schools of the AEFE network (Agency for French Education Abroad). A Bridge Class learning experience completed at LFS will be accepted in other AEFE schools, just as LFS acknowledges the Bridge Class teaching provided by other schools.

The same applies to regular classes with a continuity in curriculum being ensured for students moving to a different AEFE school. Find out more on our dedicated AEFE page.

TESTIMONIAL

The Bridge Class was an excellent choice. Beyune learnt French very efficiently in such a short time while engaging with the overall school life and new friends. The amount of work wasn’t stressful at all, and teachers were patient, lovely and kind to children that they had intimate relationships with during the course. 9 months have passed since we enrolled in Bridge Class, and now she says she can understand 80% of the regular French classes. Despite COVID distancing, the Bridge Class were resourceful and thoughtfully supported.
