On Friday April 2, the Terminale (grade 12) students were able to discover the profession of translator thanks to the meeting with Mr. O Jeonghwa.
Due to the reform of the Baccalaureate, translation is regaining its place in language teaching. The Terminale students of the LLCE course were introduced to literary translation, working on a Korean short story that Mr. Jeonghwa O had translated for the French public. Romanization, syntax, transposition: these were the challenges of budding translators. The meeting ended with short “speech shadowing” activities, a technique well known to interpreters when performing simultaneous translation.
Mr. O then presented his background and shared his experiences in front of the whole class before answering their question about his job. In order for them to experience the difficulties that a translator can face, the students participated in a small translation game. The goal ? From a literal translation, you have to find the Korean proverb before translating it into French and English!
